The law (for adults)
* Drivers and front seat passengers in cars must wear a seatbelt, unless they have a medical exemption certificate.
* Adults travelling in the rear of a car must also use a seatbelt (if they are fitted). It is the responsibility of the adult passenger (not the driver) to ensure that they are using a seatbelt.
* The police will issue a penalty of ?30 for the non-wearing of seatbelts. If the case goes to court a fine up to ?500 can be imposed.
* Like any other driver or passenger, a pregnant woman must also wear a seat belt.
* Van and goods vehicle drivers must use seatbelts where they are fitted - if they travel more than 50 metres between stops for the purpose of delivering or collecting.
