Brentwood Junior Road Safety Officers

The Brentwood Road Safety Officer and St. Thomas Junior School's mentor, Mel Prichard worked with six Year. 5 Pupils and six Year. 6 pupils from St. Thomas Junior School as part of the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) initative.

The JRSO's held a meeting with a brentwood traffic engineer outlining the problems in Sawyer Hall Lane, (there are 5 schools in the lane and the problems are extensive).

The JRSO Held:
  • Be Safe Be Seen Poster competition for the whole of their school
  • Made Fruit cocktails at the Christmas Fair to encourage parents not to drink and drive and that soft drinks can be very nice
  • Organised a mode of transport survey with their school and the two Infants schools that are in Sawyers Hall
  • Put a JRSO page on the school web site
  • Kept their own Road Safety Notice Board up to dates following the Road Safety County campaigns
  • Organised a ‘Question & Answer’ session with the Lower Classes for their English lesson covering Road Safety
  • Invited the pupils to the Hall and to bring their lunch and gave a talk about the use of Seatbelts and demonstrated with the Dims Resource just how dangerous to travel in a car without using seat belts, 120 pupils attended this session.

In September they will take an assembly for Year. 5 to hold interviews for three new Year. 5 JRSO's.

They have worked very hard all year to encourage the pupils at their school and the Infant schools on the subject of Road Safety and to take the message home. They have already made plans for the next academic year to spread the Road Safety message and will also target the other schools Sawyers Hall.
