"no excuse"

The ‘no excuse’ road safety campaign was launched on the 11th January and saw Essex Casualty Reduction Board (ECRB) partners targeting motorists who are driving poorly in and around Chelmsford, the first town in Essex chosen for the initial stage of the campaign. Click on the logo above to read the News item covering the official launch.

The campaign targets motorists who are driving poorly in Essex and for the coming year at least, Police, Fire and Road Safety Officers will be at locations around Essex to talk to people, share road safety advice and explain how the campaign will work towards reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.

no excusebrings together police enforcement and road safety education to target routes and towns where crashes and casualties are known to occur.  Events, known as Surround a Town (SAT) days, which combine police enforcement, speedwatch events and re-education for offenders are planned.

Signs have been erected at the roadside in various locations and fitted to the rear of every speed camera in Essex over the last month.

There are a number of variations of the signs which cover speeding, drink driving, seatbelts and mobile phone use. Click on the video link below to see what other signs you will see advertising the campaign.

Over the coming months ECRB partners will be running overt and covert enforcement operations and events, all over Essex. These events will target key poor driving behaviours including speeding, drink driving, the use of handheld mobile phones whilst driving and drivers and passengers who do not wear seatbelts. Essex Police have produced this handout to advise drivers that they will be enforcing in both marked and unmarked Police vehicles to reinforce the message of the campaign.

For the day of the specific event only, all seatbelt offenders will be given the option to attend a half hour education session delivered by 2 instructors who are currently involved in delivering driver training courses in Essex. The session will explain the consequences of poor driving behaviour and after successful completion the offender will have their fixed penalty notice nullified.

Events like this provide the opportunity to talk to drivers about the most common causes of accidents and make them aware of their driving behaviour. Whilst some drivers continue to put themselves and others at risk the campaign will continue to target those individuals and work to make our roads safer.
