Be Seen, Be Safe

The aim of the Be Seen, Be Safe campaign is to urge all pedestrians and cyclists of all ages to brighten up as British Summer time comes to an end.

The number of deaths and injuries on our roads increase sharply as we put the clocks back at the end of the summer and the evenings become darker earlier. In the dark, drivers are completely dependent on artificial light. Pedestrians, other road users and roads signs all become more difficult to see in the dark. However, during our “winter time” many drivers have no option but to travel home in the dark, putting themselves and other road users at risk.

Whether travelling on busy streets or rural roads, it is vitally important to make yourself visible to other road users. The “Be Seen – Be Safe” Campaign is encouraging children and older people to wear something bright and reflective and to encourage all road users to take extra care when out and about.

Parents have a vital role in ensuring their children stay safe by making certain that they can be easily seen when on the road, especially in the evening and on dark days.

This can include:

  • Buying winter coats that are bright or light in colour, or have reflective strips
  • Attaching reflective/fluorescent tape on book bags or rucksacks
  • Advising against wearing personal music devices on their journey, especially in the dark or poor weather, to keep focused on the immediate environment and personal safety
