Highway Area Office Contacts
The first point of contact for an engineering enquiry would be the local highway area office.
The County Council is responsible for ensuring that the highway is kept safe.
This includes;
- responsibility for structures, such as bridges etc
- responsibilty for road markings and signage
- responsibility for introducing weight limits on bridges where necessary
- responsibility for taking reasonable steps to keep the highway free from snow and ice
- responsibility for maintaining the majority of street lighting on the major roads in the county
- responsibility for the majority of verges which are within the boundary of the highway
- responsibility for dealing with flooding problems on the highway
There are four highway area offices situated around the county:
East Area Highways Office - responsible for Colchester and Tendring Districts
Mid Area Highways Office - responsible for Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon Districts
South Area Highways Office - responsible for Basildon, Castle Point and Rochford Districts
West Area Highways Office - responsible for Harlow, Epping, Brentwood and Uttlesford Districts
