Red Traffic Light

The objective of a red light camera at signal controlled junctions is to reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers’ non-compliance with a red signal.

Like speed cameras, the equipment automatically gathers photographic evidence of vehicle not complying with the red signal to which it is linked.

The red light camera detects red signal infringements by means of inductive loops spaced about 1 meter apart, with the first being a short distance beyond the approach arm stop line. This accurately detects the time (into the red phase) of an infringement and the vehicle speed as well as taking two photographs of the offending vehicle.

Red traffic light safety cameras monitor the junction at which they are located twenty-four hours a day.

It does not record the vehicle speed but does record the make, model and registration details which can be used to trace the owner and issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.
