Frequently Asked Questions

Who runs the Essex Speed Awareness course?
Each Police Force has an appointed Service Provider in their area to deliver these courses. In Essex it is Essex County Council working in Partnership with Essex Police.

Who is eligible to be offered a Speed Awareness Course?
Courses will only be available to drivers via an offer from a referring Police Force, having exceeded specific speed limits. Having attended a course, you will not be eligible to attend a second course within the following 3 years.

How will you know if you are eligible?
You will initially be sent a letter from the Police in the area in which your offence was detected which will include an option to attend a Speed Awareness Course and how to book one.

Are all Police Forces offering Speed Awareness Courses?
Most Police Forces operate a Speed Awareness Scheme. If you are detected speeding in a non participating area outside Essex, you may not be offered a course.

If you attend a course, will you still get penalty points on your licence?
No. Once you have successfully completed the course that is the end of the matter.

Do you have to pay for the course and what is involved?
Courses in Essex cost £95 (£92.50 if booked online) and are purely theory based interactive workshops. There is no driving involved. The course fee is payable in full to Essex County Council at the time of booking.

What happens if you are late, or unable to attend on the day?
If you are late, you will not be admitted to the course. It is your responsibility, having accepted the offer of the course, to ensure that you arrive in plenty of time. If you fail to attend or are late you will be liable to pay the course fee again if it is possible to allocate you to another course. If you are ill, you will need to contact the course administrator as soon as possible. You may be required to provide a doctors certificate. In either situation your case will be referred back to the police for their consideration. Please refer to the full Terms and Conditions for more information.

How many people will be on the course?
There may be up to 25 people on the course.

Do you need to bring your driving licence with you?
Yes. Although you will not be driving it will be required to confirm your identity. You will not be allowed onto the course unless you produce your driving licence or other agreed form of identity. If you have the new style photo card licence, you must also produce the paper counterpart. If you have to send your licence away for any reason, make sure it will be back in time for your course. You will not be allowed on the course if you have been disqualified from driving since you received your course offer.

What if you cannot attend the course that you have booked?
Subject to availability of places we should be able to accommodate you at a date and time and venue most convenient to your home postcode. If for any reason after your place has been confirmed you are unable to attend the course, you should contact the course administrator as soon as possible. It should be possible to arrange an alternative date but this cannot be guaranteed as future course places do fill up quickly.

How do you actually book a course?
If you wish to attend in Essex you should book your course on our online booking system. Information on how to access the system are in your offer letter from the Police. If you wish to book elsewhere you will have to follow the instructions as outlined in your letter.
Bookings can be made at any time and you will receive an immediate confirmation by e mail. You will be required to make payment at the time which means you could book a course place as late as two days before the course, subject to availability. If you are unable to book online the Speed Awareness office is open for booking of courses and other enquiries Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Due to current staff shortages our telephone bookings are being dealt with by our booking system suppliers, PDS, and their telephone number is 0871 200 2217.

Do you need to reply promptly?
Courses become booked very quickly so you should not delay. Your response is required promptly to the Police initial offer letter to you. No reminders will be sent. If you do not respond in time you may not secure a place on a course date that you want as the course places are strictly limited. Also, if no reply is received within a reasonable time your case will be progressed further by the Police.

What options are available for paying for the course?
Immediate payment for your course will be required at the time of booking . We do not accept cheque or cash payments but in special circumstances payment may be made by Postal Order. However, if the Postal Order payment is not received within 7 days of the provisional booking the course place will be forfeited and the matter referred back to the Police.
You can book and pay for your course online any time of the day with our online booking facility.
You must book and pay for your course at the same time. If the payment process is not completed your booking will not be confirmed. Instructions to use this facility will be included in your course offer letter. Most Credit and Debit cards are accepted with the exception of American Express. You will receive an e-mail confirmation on completion of the transaction. It is advisable to download the map and information to clients as you will be unable to access the online booking system once your course has been booked and paid for. However, should you forget to do this, instructions on how to access copies of the maps and the client information are available here.

Can you appeal against the offence?
Yes. You have the right to appeal against the offence. This will however need to be done through the Magistrates Court. You should reject the offer of a Speed Awareness Course and confirm in writing to the police that you would prefer this matter to be heard in court. The details of how to do this will be on the initial correspondence issued by the police. If you appeal against the offence, the offer to attend a course is withdrawn.

Do you have to take a written or driving test?
No, however there will be group discussions that you will be expected to participate in to successfully complete the course.

What if you have special needs?
You will be asked to indicate on the application form if you have any special needs that will have to be taken into consideration in order to ensure that you can fully participate in the course. All of the venues used to deliver the courses have full disabled access. We will make every effort to facilitate any special needs.

What if you have any other queries?
The offices only handle course booking and administration and no courses are held there. The telephone booking staff at PDS only deal with the booking of courses. If you have an enquiry you need to phone 01268 297522 between 9.30am and 2.30pm. Please do not phone or visit any of the centres where the courses are held if your question relates to booking, variation or availability of courses. They do not have access to any booking facilities and should only be contacted if you are lost or late on the day of your course. You can also e mail us by clicking here. Please note that we cannot accept course bookings by e mail. It is an enquiry service only.
