Community Speed Watch

Since its introduction in 2007, the public's interest and participation within the Essex Community Speedwatch Scheme (CSW) has exceeded all expectations. In 2010, the number of CSW groups is likely to double to 120. For that reason it has been necessary to review the scheme, make recommendations for change and subsequently relaunch it.

Whilst some CSW groups are currently working very well with their Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT) there is some inconsistency across the county. It has been decided that the day to day management of the groups will be passed to the local NPT.

The identified officer from each NPT will be the specific point of contact for the group. Their role will be to liaise closely with the groups members, deliver training and to deal quickly and effectively with issues arising from the CSW activity.

As speeding remains a constant issue of concern within every community, CSW members will be encouraged to report their activities to their local Neighbourhood Action Panel. This will not only act as reassurance but may also generate further interest in joining the scheme from others.

The general administration of the CSW scheme will continue to be undertaken from within the Safer Roads Bureau at Billericay. A new data recording system is being installed that will prove more cost effective and efficient at recording and interpreting the data, generating the warning letters and other enforcement action against offenders.

Further support to the CSW scheme will be provided by the Road Policing Unit and specifically the Motorcycle Unit.
