Theatre in Education When schools take students to the theatre it is usually to see a particular production. Theatre in Education, on the other hand, starts with an educational topic or debate and develops a show around it. Theatre in Education is offered in Essex to all schools. The plays cover general road safety subjects such as cycling, seat belt wearing, speeding and drink driving, but also include personal development subjects such as peer group pressure, decision making, responsibilities and consequences. There are a number of companies in the UK that specialise in producing theatre to be performed in schools. Such productions often have drama workshops attached and may involve the pupils in the performance itself.
Theatre in Education is a very effective method of delivering road safety through drama and has been an integral part of road safety education for a number of years.
Plays are delivered from Key Stage 1 (Year 4) to Year Stage 5 (Years 12/13) and encompass aspects of road safety from child pedestrians and cyclist to adolescent pedestrians and young drivers.
At the moment, Theatre in Education is offered to schools at no charge. Contact your local road safety officer to find out when the next tour is in your district. There are currently 6 plays that are used throughout Essex schools.
