Young, newly qualified drivers and riders and their passengers are at much higher risk than other road user groups.

25% of fatalities in Essex in the past three years have involved younger drivers, and more crashes involve 18-year-olds than any other age group. The 'at fault' crash rate for younger drivers is three times higher than that of drivers aged 26 - 59 years - and excessive speed is a contributory factor in 25% of all younger driver crashes.

As a passenger, a young person is more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a car driven by a friend at this age than by any other accident or illness.

THINKING ABOUT DRIVING

This may be just what you are looking for.

The Young Driver pack is sent to all 17 year olds who live in the Essex County Council area to help them to stay safe and avoid you becoming a statistic.

More young drivers are involved in road collisions leading to death or serious injury than any other class of driver.

There is also a booklet for parents / carers to offer advice on how they may be able to help to keep young drivers safe.
