The fixed penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is £60 per person.

You are twice as likely to die in a crash if you do not wear a seatbelt.

The law (for adults)

  • Drivers and front seat passengers in cars must wear a seatbelt, unless they have a medical exemption certificate.
  • Adults travelling in the rear of a car must also use a seatbelt (if they are fitted). It is the responsibility of the adult passenger (not the driver) to ensure that they are using a seatbelt.
  • The police will issue a penalty of £60 for the non-wearing of seatbelts. If the case goes to court a fine up to £500 can be imposed.
  • Like any other driver or passenger, a pregnant woman must also wear a seat belt.
  • Van and goods vehicle drivers must use seatbelts where they are fitted - if they travel more than 50 metres between stops for the purpose of delivering or collecting.
