Speed in the Community

Road Safety and Essex Police worked with Yr. 5 pupils outside West Horndon Primary School to assess the speed of the vehicles and try to educate the drivers of the dangers of not keeping to the speed limit.

If a driver is found to be travelling at excessive speed the police stopped the vehicle and the pupils will talked to the driver, showing or reading out work which they will have already completed the week before. They will also give the driver leaflets outlying the dangers of speeding.

Six drivers were pulled over with speeds from 35 – 40 mph. The pupils were excellent about encouraging the drivers not to speed and outlining the consequences of their actions.

Two of the drivers commented as follows:

“This has more affect on me than a ticket. I think it’s a really good idea and you should be doing it more often.”

“Well done, you should be very proud of yourselves, it’s really made me think and re assess my driving”
