Speed Conference

The 5th Speed Conference for year six pupils  was held on the 2nd June at the Rawreth Village Hall and was attended by pupil representatives and teaching staff from 14 local Primary Schools .

As a district , the purpose of the annual event which is organised and run by the Road Safety Team is to allow the results of speed surveys conducted outside each school to be shared and  discussed and questions to be asked of representatives from the Police and Highways and Transportation as to what could be changed to alleviate the problems and anxieties of the pupils regarding their safety .

Each school presented it's findings in detail and the main themes outside all schools were non wearing of seatbelts, speeding, cars with one occupant only and parent parking issues , surprisingly but happily, it would appear that use of mobile phones seems, at the moment, to be decreasing within the district.

Both the Police and Highways representatives answered all questions with honesty and frankness and a number of side issues were also covered, it would appear that some of the schools have already formed themselves into a group and are working on ideas with the pupils and parents to reduce parking and increase awareness in their own areas.

Also present in support on the day were Essex County  Councillor Steven Castle, Chairman of Rochford District Council Derek  Stensby, Chairman of Rayleigh Town Council Margaret Spencer and a number of other local Councillors and the ECC Area Highways Manager for South Area .
