Fleet World Honours 2010

Council’s fleet amongst the safest in the world

Essex County Council (ECC) triumphed at the Fleet World Honours yesterday (Tuesday 18 May) winning the Fleet Safety Award for Large Fleets, an accolade which sees ECC recognised as being among the safest fleets in Britain.

The 2010 judging panel was chaired by Steve Moody, editor of Fleet World, and included Ken Rogers, Natalie Wallis, John Kendall and Ross Durkin from the Fleet World editorial team.

Commenting on the council’s safety initiatives, Mr Moody said: “One cannot fail to be impressed by the comprehensive nature of the road safety programme undertaken by Essex County Council. Its participation in the ‘Driving for Better Business’ campaign has produced many clear benefits and the organisation should be held up as a shining example of how much can be achieved if the right resources are available, and the senior management team is fully committed to the project.

“The council’s own data demonstrates the effectiveness of their scheme in reducing accident rates, and this has clear human, financial and operational advantages. Fleet managers who question the potential benefits of such a scheme have only to look at the case study on the ‘Driving for Better Business’ web site to be convinced.”

This award follows on from the recent success of Essex County Council being awarded ‘business champion’ status by the Government-backed ‘Driving for Better Business’ campaign

Essex County Councillor Norman Hume, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “This is a tremendous achievement, which helps to raise the profile of the work we do to improve road safety within our own fleet. We are also committed to using what we have learnt to help other businesses in Essex improve their fleet safety and ultimately make Essex’s roads safer.”
