Speed in the Community

Road Safety and Essex Police worked with Year 5 pupils from St. Peters Primary School to highlight the problem of speeding drivers.

Eight groups of 6 children had the opportunity to assess the speeds of vehicles outside their school and to try and educate the drivers of the dangers of not keeping to the speed limit.

If a driver was found to be travelling in excess of the speed limit, the police would stop the driver and the children would have the opportunity to to talk to the driver and show them or read out to them work which they had already completed the week before. The children also gave out leaflets to the drivers outlining the dangers of speeding.

The highest speed recorded in the 30mph area was 40mph and a driver who was also stopped for exceeding the speed limit was discoved to have never taken a driving test and therefore did not hold a driving licence.

The drivers commented that it was better to hear what the children had to say than to get a ticket and they were also very impressed with the work and way the pupils spoke to them - it has made them consider the consequences of their actions much more.
