Chelmsford College Young Riders / Drivers Event
Chelmsford College’s Enrolment Day on Tuesday 6th September invited new students who intend to travel to college by car or motorcycle to a Young Drivers / Riders event organised by ECC Road Safety Officer Gillian Beale in partnership with Essex Police, ECFRS, Mototweeks, Castle Point and Rochford Motorcycle Group.
All students attended a presentation to highlight the risks and consequences of driving and Riding and the potential young drivers, were invited to have a go in the Police Interceptors Subaru simulator which was a definite attraction.
The Riders after attending their presentation were offered a practical experience in a controlled area of the car park to young riders who have recently passed their CBT training. The skills area run by the Castle Point and Rochford Motorcycle Group offered a Highway Code quiz and the practical manoeuvres around a coned off course at slow speed. Those students’ were also offered an observed ride out with Essex Police motorcyclists who gave a constructive critique of their riding ability.
Many of the students were not wearing appropriate clothing or gloves and there were some major faults identified by the maintenance check with Mototweeks which included loose chain, bald tyres, brake pads badly worn and faulty lights.
The event gave the students and parent’s notice of faults to repair in order for the students to receive their College parking permit and to offer advice about correct safety equipment that should be worn.
Riders were offered a chance to win a FREE place on the New Post CBT Training course subsidised by Essex County Council at £20 for 3 hours rider tuition. This will be run by local motorcycle providers.
The number of students who benefited from this event were:
45 young riders and 82 young drivers.
