Defence Road Safety Week

Servicemen and women at Colchester Garrison got a stark lesson in the dangers they could face on the roads thanks to the Casualty Reduction Board Partnership and crews from Colchester Fire Station.

Defence Road Safety Day was created by the Ministry of Defence to promote road safety to soldiers who are returning from active service.

Reece Lovell, RTC Reduction, said: “Crews simulated an RTC with live casualties being rescued from vehicles by firefighters using cutting equipment.

“It was to get the message across to service men and women who have been on active duty overseas. The way they need to drive over there is very different from the way they should drive on the UK’s roads.  The day was a great success. The garrison closed off all gates except the one where the exercise was taking place so everyone arriving or leaving saw the demonstrations. It was a really good way to make sure that the road safety message reached its target audience.
