The Essex Casualty Reduction Board - 01.03.07
Essex appeals to motorcycle dealers

The Essex Motorcycle Forum, on behalf of The Essex Casualty Reduction Board, is hosting a Dealer Day on Thursday 8 th March 2007 at Hylands House from 12 noon until 2pm.

The aim of the event is to encourage dealers to assist in the promotion of positive safety messages to all riders. This will include the provision of information on training for all motorcyclists, both newly qualified and the more experienced, together with encouraging the use of correct clothing and equipment to help prevent motorcycle casualties.

A brand new motorcycle simulator has been lent to the Casualty Reduction Board by Honda and will be available on the day to demonstrate to motorcyclists how they can improve their riding.

The County's campaign 'Take Control - Ride Safely' which aims to combat motorcycle injuries, will be re-launched on the day.

The campaign was launched as result of the following casualty statistics that occurred during 2004.

•  38% of riders killed in 2004 had owned their bikes for less than 3 months.

•  61% of riders killed in 2004 had owned their bikes for less than 12 months.

•  30% of riders are more likely to be fatally injured in an accident compared to a car occupant.

County Councillor Rodney Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation and Chairman of the Casualty Reduction Board said "I am very pleased that so many dealers have come forward to support the Casualty Reduction Board in their attempt to reduce the number of accidents involving motorcyclists. We have identified that the retailers are crucial to our success in engaging with this group of road users. The dealers also have a key role to play in promoting proper protective clothing and further training and thereby ensure that their customers can keep on riding".

Motorcycle dealers from across Essex have been invited to attend the event.

For more information on the Dealers Day please contact Kathy Payne, Senior Road Safety Officer at Essex County Council on 01245 437297.
