Southend-on-Sea Borough Council - 2007
Road crash drama

A sixth-form driver who drives too fast, crashes and kills a moped rider is featured in a forthcoming play for young people.

The hard-hitting production called Legal Weapon highlights the potential dangers of driving, and will tour Southend borough secondary schools from Monday 26th February to Friday 2nd March.

In addition, there will be a performance of the play at 8pm at the Focus Youth House in Short Street, Southend for youth groups such as Scouts and Guides and any young people who did not see the play at their own school.

The play, organised by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Road Safety Team is performed by APE theatre company.

It is a fiction based on real story of a sixth-form couple whose romance and ambitions are turned upside-down when Andy kills a moped-rider in a high-speed crash.

The production lasts about fifty minutes, is packed full of physical theatre, meaty naturalistic scenes, visual gags and vocal sound effects.

It confronts the issues of excessive speed, peer pressure and attitudes amongst young drivers, taking the audience through a roller-coaster of emotions.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for a Safer, Cleaner Southend, Councillor Ian Robertson says: “Getting safety messages across to young people is always a challenge.

“Drama is an excellent tool to grab their attention and get them thinking about serious issues.I hope that many local youngsters will take the opportunity to see this play.”
