The Essex Casualty Reduction Board - 02.2007
Road Runners safety event
Essex County Council's road safety team is holding a Road Runners interactive educational event aimed at year 11 (15-17 year olds) at East Mersea Youth Camp, from 6 th to 8 th February 2007.
Young people from local schools and colleges have been invited to attend for a full day of activities where they will participate in various practical experiences of road safety. Hazard perception, laws on drink driving and seat belts will be addressed and all students will have the chance to drive a car under the supervision of a professional driving instructor.
The event has been funded through a grant from the Colchester Community Safety Partnership, and includes partners from Essex Police, Essex Fire & Rescue Service, the Driving Standards Agency, Essex Trading Standards, St John Ambulance and Dedham Vale Driving School. The Essex Casualty Reduction Board, which aims to reduce road casualties across the county, also supports the event.
Essex County Councillor, Rodney Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation and Chairman of the Essex Casualty Reduction Board said: "Young drivers are one of our main areas of concern. 25% of fatalities in Essex over the past three years have involved younger drivers, and more crashes involve 18-year-olds than any other age group. Educational events such as Road Runners can provide some of the practical experience and advice that potential young drivers need, in order to understand their own responsibilities for safety on the road."
