Pupils in this age range are most vulnerable as pedestrians and while cycling.
Pupils often walk to school in groups and are easily distracted by peers, mobile phones and other personal communication or entertainment devices. We can supply publicity materials produced by the Department for Transport to make young people aware of these dangers. We also ask that you support us in the distribution of the All About Road Safety Packs to years 7 and 9. These packs are provided for every child in the county and have been designed specifically for children and their parents at these key stages of development. These packs can also be used as a classroom resource for the delivery of road safety education.
Theatre in Education is offered in Essex to all schools. The plays cover general road safety subjects such as cycling, seat belt wearing, speeding and drink driving, but also include personal development subjects such as peer group pressure, decision making, responsibilities and consequences. At the moment, Theatre in Education is offered to schools at no charge. Contact your local road safety officer to find out when the next tour is in your district.
The key to safe cycling is professional training, and this is now provided by the National Cycling Standard. For details about cyclist training for secondary school pupils go to www.ctc.org.uk or www.essexcc.gov.uk/cycling or telephone 0845 6037631 and ask for the road safety team.
Perhaps most important of all, schools should build road safety into the curriculum through their Road Safety Policy and Travel Plan. The Department for Transport and Department for Education and Skills requires every school to have these in place by 2010, as set out in the Government's white paper, 'A New Deal for Transport :Better for Everyone'.
For further help and advice about this ring 0845 6037631 and ask for the road safety or School Travel Plan team.
