Sixth forms, colleges and universities
Why do we need to deliver road safety initiatives to Sixth Forms, Colleges and Universities?

Young, newly qualified drivers and riders and their passengers are at much higher risk than other road user groups.

25% of fatalities in Essex in the past three years have involved younger drivers, and more crashes involve 18-year-olds than any other age group. The 'at fault' crash rate for younger drivers is three times higher than that of drivers aged 26 - 59 years - and excessive speed is a contributory factor in 25% of all younger driver crashes.

As a passenger, a young person is more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a car driven by a friend at this age than by any other accident or illness.

Your local Road Safety Officer will take every opportunity to assist and advise you, and, in some instances, to deliver elements of road safety education to your students. You will find a list of local Road Safety Officers on
Road Safety can be delivered in a variety of formats, including off timetable interactive events called Road Runner and Theatre in Education (TIE) delivered at your school, college or university. You might also like to visit a newly established website for young drivers at
www.nomorelifts.com

Further and higher educational establishments can help counter the dangers their students face by supporting and participating in ECRB campaigns targeting this group.
