A MESSAGE TO EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENTS ACROSS ESSEX, SOUTHEND AND THURROCK
We need you to help us meet our targets.
The government has set all local authorities targets to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured (KSI) on roads - one of the ways we can tackle this is through education and training.
In Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, the objective is to reduce the number of casualties in 2008 to fewer than the following:
Essex 799 KSIs
Southend-on-Sea 69 KSIs
Thurrock 88 KSIs
We cannot do this alone and would encourage you to help us achieve this by working together in partnership with us, as there is much that you can do as educators to help achieve this target.
You can lead by example and develop one of the following policies and practices that will contribute to achieving a reduction in casualties:
Travel Plans - Did you know that you could receive additional finding from Government once you have produced a Travel Plan? Most schools and colleges have a Travel Plan and, in fact, the government requires all education establishments to have one by 2010.
Road Safety Policy and Plan - In addition to the Travel Plan we would like all schools and colleges to have a document to outline your policy and good practices in Road Safety. This would help us to help you to deliver education programmes to your students.
Managing Occupational Road Risk Policy Such a policy will help you consider your responsibilities and liabilities to all members of staff who drive to work or as part of their job on behalf of your establishment.
Your local Road Safety Officer will take every opportunity to assist and advise you, and, in some instances, to deliver elements of road safety education to your students. You will find a list of local Road Safety Officers on
