Mark was recently involved in an accident in which his car overturned. Fortunately, he was belted up and came out of the crash without even a scratch. Here's his story, told in his own words.

"I was driving the A1060, heading in towards Chelmsford. On my way to work, same as every morning.

"Came into Margaret Roding, don’t know if you know it, but you come into the village via a sharp bend. The speed limit drops from national to 40mph.

"So like every other morning, I braked coming into the bend, this time though the back end of the car kicked. Started skidding to the other side of the road.

"My side window was all smashed in and the car was filled with a smoke like substance, from the air bags apparently."

"Got the car out of the skid and thought I had it but the car just wasn’t slowing, felt like it was speeding up if anything. Anyway the car spun 360 and hit the curb back on the side of the road I should have been on.

"Next thing I knew the air bags were going off - then it was real quiet. Apart from the radio being on. I was upside down in a ditch with the back end high in the air. My side window was all smashed in and the car was filled with a smoke like substance, from the air bags apparently.

"Luckily I was able to climb out. Two guys had stopped in a BMW and gave me a hand. I asked if they’d seen what happened as I didn’t really know. It all happened so fast, yet so slow at the same time. All they could tell me was they came around the bend (heading in the opposite direction) and saw my car 'somersaulting though the air'.

"Who knows what really happened?

"The seatbelt did it’s thing. Locked and held me firmly in my place."

"We found some oil on the road right where I lost it - not from my car as it never sprang any fluids. It had been raining and the roads were wet. And yes, it’s a piece of road I know real well so sure, maybe I just wasn’t concentrating as much as I should have been. Maybe I was going a little faster than I thought prior to braking.

"Anyway the front end of the car was all smashed in. And obviously I was upside down. But the seatbelt did it’s thing. Locked and held me firmly in my place. In fact it held me so well into my seat that the air bag never actually hit me.

"Had I not been wearing my seatbelt? Well . . . I’d rather not think about that."
